My First Carbonara

For the second time, I am planning to cook something on Christmas eve.  I tried cooking my first spaghetti last year and it was successful.  I have this tendency of losing my appetite after I cook so I made sure to leave something for myself. And it's surely a leftover, my brother, thought maybe that I've had my fill almost consumed my share. So I thought it was good.

I did not really plan doing it again but I am inclined to cook, this time I thought of something quick and easy yet tasty. There's already the fettuccine waiting to be cooked so I thought of cooking carbonara.  So I searched online for some receipes and I am glad to have found a lot but I am not really interested in following everything, I just wanted to get an idea how it is cooked and what are the ingredients needed.  Here's what I have on my list (combined from other sources:

The gathered recipe:
500 gms. Fettuccine
200 gms. bacon
200 gms. ham
2 cloves garlic, minced2 tbsp. Parmesan cheese - grated
2 tbsp. chopped fresh parsely
2 Nestle All Purpose Cream
2 cans Cream of Mushroom
Olive Oil
salt and pepper

What I end up with:
200 gms. bacon - not available
2 tbsp. Parmesan cheese - grated (not available in small size)
2 tbsp. chopped fresh parsely - not available
2 cans Cream of Mushroom - don't feel like mixing it with these :)
**Most of the ingredients are not available because I decided to shop the next day, can't bear long lines.
400 gms. Fettuccine
200 gms. ham - diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 250ml Nestle All Purpose Cream
estimated 2 tbsp. Kinchay instead of Parsely
1 regular sized Magnolia Quickmelt instead of Parmesan
Settled with regular Cooking Oil :)
salt and pepper

Here's what I did (5 steps to cook my Carbonara):
Step 1.  Heated the pan and put a little oil to cook the diced ham.
Step 2.  Once cooked, removed ham and set it aside.  With the remaining oil, saute the garlic.
Step 3.  When the garlic is about to turn brown but make sure it's not brown, saute kinchay for 3 seconds.
Step 4.  Pour the all the All-Purpose Cream, add 3/4 ham and 3/4 Magnolia quickmelt & slowly stir in one direction.
Step 5.  Simmer until the mixture becomes a little thick then add the fettuccine pasta. Mix thoroughly and slowly.

It's now ready to serve!  Make sure to spread a little of pepper and a dash of salt to taste.  I served the first serving to my gf and guess what, she didn't like it..haha co'z it wasn't sprinkled with salt but after I did she asked me if she can bring home some of it.

Anyways, whether it's just to please me or not, I saved half of it for her to bring home.

*Updated with pics, never thought this is easy and cheaper than spaghetti - more delectable too.

Make Your Christmas Message Felt

I can still recall that day when we (me and my one and only) went to the church on the first day of Advent.  The priest sermon was about how we could possibly celebrate this Christmas, in a way different from the previous years but still the spirit remains the same.  He specifically mentioned about giving love on Christmas day.  He reiterated many times about the love for our family or those people close to our heart, the love for other people whom we do not know, and the love for our enemy.

We possibly heard this message a zillion times.  We could possibly say we've done our part and we may be true to ourselves saying those words, but have we felt any difference? or is it just something usual because let's say you're really that kind of person and this would come easy for you but have made sure our message went through?

Doing things like we normally do doesn't seem to exert extra effort on us and this could mean something else to another person. It could impart another message that you're just too good doing it that it doesn't really matter if you mean it or not. It could simply be interpreted differently.

When I say something to someone dear to me or to a family member, they oftentimes treat it as simple conversation even if you're serious about it.  It takes a little effort to show that you're serious, that you mean it.  On the other hand, showing any gesture of kindness to other people not related to you mostly don't take much effort and they easily appreciate it.  Try giving a gift to your sister and to someone unknown to you. Or maybe call  the person who  mistreated you before and say that you have a gift for him/her.  What do you think their response be? Maybe you can imagine how your sister would respond to you. How about the one whom you do not know?  And the one who wronged you? What difference does it make though when you're giving them all a gift?

Obviously there is a significant difference.  A message when heard according to how you mean it resonates accordingly whereas if you simply act according to what you think should be done could also mean otherwise.  So this Christmas, try to make a difference.  I know you have something to say so surely make your Christmas message felt.

Merry Christmas everyone!

The Making Of A Magical Christmas

Every time we see lanterns, blinking lights, bells and other Christmas decorations hanging around town, villages and in our homes, we feel that Christmas is in the air. When December comes, almost every week you’ll probably attend a Christmas gathering. Whether it be a gathering of friends, colleagues, team building or company sponsored we all relive the spirit of Christmas.

So how do you relieve Christmas spirit?

Usually we find answers like giving love on Christmas day, hmmn… sounds familiar? Yeah, just as the song goes. Christmas is always a time for sharing: sharing blessings, gifts, love, joy and forgiveness. We all have our own unique way of expressing ourselves.

While reading news clips online, I came across a very interesting story about a couple who started a "Magic".  This is not something about potions, this is something real - well in another sense :)

Here's how it goes: the couple went to Aramingo Diner in Philadelphia for breakfast.  After their meal, the  couple decided to pay double: for their meal and for one of the resto's diners.  They asked the waitresses not to say anything until they left.  They only greeted their customers "Merry Christmas" and said "that person picked up your tab."  And then the next paid for another creating a chain reaction.  This went on and on for hours.

What can you say?  This is just wonderful!  I would love to do the same thing.  It feels good to be able to do something for someone you don't even know and knowing that it created a chain reaction is just amazing!

Mayon Volcano Spews Lava

Mayon Volcano, the "Perfect Cone" and the most beautiful of Philippine volcanoes glowed mightily in the dark, spewing lava from it's center down to its slope. A magnificent but dangerously beautiful sight at dawn on Tuesday awaken the town of Albay, prompting the immediate evacuation of these affected areas within the 6 to 8 kilometer danger zones.

As of today, almost 60,000 people (est. 10,000 families) were displaced seeking refuge to nearby towns. The towns of Bonga, Mabingit and Buyuan are in immediate danger according to Phivolcs director Renato Solidum. The lava flow is directed to these towns.

Alex Baloloy, a science research analyst said that a major eruption of Mayon might occur within the period of two weeks if ever the abnormalities would continue and further intensify.

Immaculate Conception

The Philippines being largely a Roman Catholic nation is celebrating today the feast of Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

The doctrine of Immaculate Conception is the belief that Virgin Mary is free from original sin.  Unlike all human beings, it is a special gift given by God as she would become the mother of the Lord's only son, our savior Jesus Christ.

Virgin Mary's life is a challenge to us all, to live our life in obedience to God's will. As she remained to serve the Lord to the very end, and remained without sin, we too must strive to live a good life and follow her lead 'til the end of our life.

Maguindanao Massacre

This is a repost from another site. It’s sad that Philippines now beat Iraq, not on oil but being the worst country for journalists. It's atrocious, barbaric, gruesome, horrible, nightmarish, so evil to the highest degree; how could they do these to women, children, reporters and innocent civilians. There certainly is no law on the land to serve justice to these evil deeds, they should be stripped of their humanity!

5th COMMANDMENT: THOU SHALL NOT KILL

Please display this black ribbon in your blogs, Tweeter account and Facebook accounts as we, in unison, mourn the victims of yet another atrocity in the hands of merciless politicians.

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo (who earlier declared a State of Emergency in Maguindanao), the media and press people, the religious and even the US government condemned the merciless killings.

As of press time, forty seven (57) cadavers have been recovered while 4 victims survived. The Maguindanao Massacre survivors are now in the custody of proper authorities and were reported to have been placed under the witness protection program by the Department of Justice (DOJ).

Meanwhile, the Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) strongly urged its members to wear a black ribbon or arm band to protest the Maguindanao Massacre and to show sympathy to the victims’ families.

JUSTICE is what we need now, so help us, dear God. May their souls rest in peace.

Manny Pacquiao - Boxing Legend

Despite the storm, the corruption and all the problems facing Filipinos today one thing is for sure, they're united today to cheer the victory of their beloved Manny Pacquiao, who just won the seventh weight class title adding to the number of his collection of boxing title belts.  Just minutes after he defeated Cotto, fans chanted "We want Floyd, we want floyd" so I guess that's what we would be seeing next.  We can't be so sure if that would turn out to be the next on Pacman's list but he surely wanted to enjoy for now.

“I just want to take a vacation first,” Pacman said. “My job is to fight in the ring and it’s up to my promoter to negotiate for my next fight.”

Recently, Floyd Mayweather Jr's win over Juan Manuel Marquez in September was overwhelming.  It broke the record for a rare one-million pay-per-view.  If this recent bout between Manny and Cotto exceeds that (let's reserve our expectations for now 'til the results are out) of Floyd and Marquez, there is a big chance both will see each other on the ring the soonest.  After all, Floyd is running out of challengers. With Pacman's 50-3-2 record against Floyd's 40-0, this would be the dream match of the year. With the year almost over, this fight would be enough entertainment for this year.  If Floyd or Bob Arum want this fight, they could surely come to an agreement and let's hope for a dream fight in 2010.

Back to School!

It's school time again! Second semester here in the Philippines starts on the first week of November. I managed to enroll this time since my new work schedule allows me get the morning and early afternoon class schedules. I only have an hour and a half extra to prepare for school and to commute. My last subject ends at 6PM so I'd only have basically less than 5-hours of sleep. Hoping I would fare well with balancing my work and studies.

I know I'd be lagging with my blog but rest assured if you drop by and leave some drops, you'll definitely get in return. Got someone to reciprocate and thanks ahead for the visits!

How to Release Phlegm Naturally

I found an article online on how to remove/release phlegm naturally, I thought I'd share (excuse me for the topic).  Certain conditions could trigger these specially to pregnant women, allergic people, sudden weather changes, etc.  In my case, I am prone to this especially with sudden weather changes plus I got allergic rhinitis and sinusitis that could easily lead to flu and block the passage of air on my nostrils. I also learned that you don't have to be sick to have a lot of them on your body. So what is phlegm anyway?

Phlegm is a sticky fluid secreted by the mucous membranes of humans and other animals. Its definition is limited to the mucus produced by the respiratory system, excluding that from the nasal passages, and particularly that which is expelled by coughing (sputum). Its composition varies, depending on climate, genetics, and state of the immune system, but basically is a water-based gel consisting of glycoproteins, immunoglobulins, lipids, etc. (1)

For those who are in distress because of from  phlegm, there is a natural way of removing/releasing it.  This can be done during your idle hours when you want to nap for a while or while resting.  You would need around 3 pillows for these and that you have to lie down to do this.

Below are the steps taken from the post of  (2)Tammy Lawrence-Cymbalisty, owner of TLC Services, on the HOWTODOTHINGS website.

Step 1:
Prepare to lie down:  You can lie down on a yoga mat or a bed if you are not comfortable on the floor.

If you are pregnant, you will lie down on your left side; everyone else should lie on their right side with the legs straight. Lying on the right helps the heart muscle to relax in your chest.

The arm should be straight up by your head on the side you are lying on.  You can relax the opposite arm in front of your chest.

Step 2:
Stack your pillows:  Place two stacked pillows under your feet.  The last pillow should be placed under the right armpit; for pregnancy, this will be your left armpit.

Step 3:
Relax:  Stay in this position for five to fifteen minutes.  You can repeat this several times a day.  Put on some relaxing music or use the down time for meditation.

Step 4:
Why do inversions help release phlegm?
Gravity!  Although this is not an inversion like headstand, it is still a mild inversion.

Water will always flow to the center of the earth.  In the body, it will flow to its lowest point. Think of doing a headstand.  Stomach acid is stopped from moving into the esophagus because there is a flap at the top of the stomach to prevent the stomach acids (water) from flowing upwards;  if there was no flap, the esophagus would be burned or eaten by the acid, leaving a large hole. The nasal cavities do not have anything to stop them from draining which is why mucous (water) will flow downward, removing the excess.

Another way to understand it would be to take a bottle of water and turn it upside down.  Gravity will obviously pull the water to its opposite end, similar to the body in this position.

Step 5:
Zero side effects.  The best part about releasing phlegm naturally, using this mild inversion is that you will only experience positive benefits.  When you get up off of the floor, you will find your sinuses are clear, almost like magic!

Keep in mind the colour of your phlegm can tell you much about what is happening in your body.  You may need to see a doctor also, especially if symptoms persist.

Being Health Conscious

For three weeks I was keeping myself on track. Graveyard shift, insomnia, acute gastroenteritis and today, battling dry cough with phlegm.

The other day, I was absent due to acute gastroenteritis. The nurse gave me Buscopan and 2 Imodium, since I was having LBM (excuses!)in the afternoon, and this is to be taken simultaneously after taking a meal. So I took it and there I was, I felt relieved of my LBM but my stomach seemed bloated. It pains every once in a while and I can hear sort of commotion in my stomach. I couldn't help it, I gotta work and have to endure this feeling.

Our office is too cold and I happen to be stationed to the direction of the air flowing out of the air conditioner. Guess when you're trying your best to be careful that's also the time when your patience would be tested. So anyway I gotta bear with it else I won't have a workstation. When my shift is about to end, I realized something blocks my air passage in the esophagus and my voice began to fade. It's the phlegm which started to build up plus the nasal drips, I got allergic rhinitis, not sure if I got the term right but that was it.

I decided to see the doctor for the cure. The doctor is not really that old, she got glasses but looks classy and chic. Put it simply, she's beautiful. I liked it when she attentively listened to me whining, feeling comfortable eh, but hey that wasn't an excuse, she got me with an Rx amounting to 1k inclusive of the vitamins.

Well I guess with all the hard work, the body wants to claim it's share, not a bad deal. So I guess next time I see the doctor and thought of not spending much, I'll have her guess what else is not functioning well with my system other than me telling her my story, juz kidding. So folks, take care of your body, drink plenty of water and exercise a bit. Any exercise will do, so long as you sweat :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

UPDATE CALL FOR PNRI AND BAYANIHAN

I was looking for a way to be able to send a donation online so at least I could help at least to the victims of Tropical Storm Ondoy. It's my daily habit to read news and I got some news sites bookmarked so I could easily browse for news. What I was looking for was an article that has any link for online donations but I can't find any.

Anyway, I thought I would send money online through Philippine National Red Cross. I was glad at first that there are options and instructions on the front page.

ONLINE DONATION - SO JURASSIC

So I clicked on the online donation for credit cards, the button that says "DONATE TO US" with the credit card image. I was hoping I could fill in the card details and the amount so I could send but I was headed to a form like a sponsor where you have the option to choose either monthly, quarterly or annually. This is not what I was hoping to be led. I tried navigating the website but there’s really nothing there where you could donate online, but there’s an option to send bank order though or to send your card details and the amount that you intend to donate. I just don’t feel comfortable with that. I’ve even read an article from another online national newspaper about the frustration of a certain Paulo Coelho, author of “The Alchemist” who I guess tried to donate through the PNRI website but failed to do so. It’s just not possible. He posted on his twitter account his frustration about PNRI’s “Jurassic methods”, his terminology of the process, of collecting donations.

PNRI DONATIONS AND PAYPAL

Maybe I can understand that PNRI might be really busy with their job. I also thought, there must be someone who is in-charge with the web updates and adding this feature won’t even take 30-minutes. I hope they could actually set up a paypal account and make that donate button for real. This won’t take 30-minutes of their time. The procedure to do it can be searched from the paypal website paypal.com. This would greatly help PNRI to collect more donations especially that we have also OFW’s who are willing to help.

SUNSTAR HELPLINE

For those who would like to donate online, Sun Star also set up a special helpline webpage to help Ondoy victims. You may visit the site here. For donations, you may donate via paypal here or by using the button below.

Please donate any amount, we greatly appreciate your generosity.

Ondoy's Fury

This is a bird’s eye view shoswing the devastation wrought by Tropical Storm Ketsana (locally known as Ondoy) in Manila. Houses are submerged and cars are carried by the strong current. The one on the picture showing mostly rooftops shows the extent of water levels in Marikina City, one of the most badly hit wherein more than 50 people reportedly died. Heavy rain poured continuously last Saturday overflowing rivers which resulted to flooded streets. (Photo by MARK BALMORES, taken from Manila Bulletin online.)

This is the first time Manila sank completely, according to Bayani Fernando, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chairman. Initially, the typhoon wasn't expected to hit this far. It was even broadcast at around 65-75kph only. Philippines sadly is located in a strategic place wherein tropical storm originates, the Pacific Ocean.

This photo you see on the right shows the large areas of Taguig City which is still submerged in water. This photograph taken from a plane after taking off from the NAIA Ninoy Aquino International Airport on Monday afternoon.

Another aerial shot shows a mass of survivors and vehicles stuck in a bridge in Cainta, Rizal. Pinning their hope to elevated places, they flocked to the bridge in multitudes and once can only hope the bridge won't collapse. (Photo taken from Manila Bulletin.)

*A Pacific typhoon or tropical storm like Ketana is a tropical cyclone that forms in the northwestern Pacific Ocean. The basin is demarcated within the Pacific Ocean from Asia, north of the equator, and west of the international date line. Storms from the Eastern and Central Pacific crossing the date line are re-designated as typhoons; prior to entering the basin they are respectively called "hurricanes" and "severe tropical cyclones." This basin features the strongest cyclones on record. Nearly one-third of the world's tropical cyclones form within the Western Pacific. This makes this basin the most active. Pacific typhoons have formed year round, with peak months from August to October. The peak months correspond to that of the Atlantic hurricane seasons.

Since July, there has been intense reporting about brewing storms and I've even received an email that circulated through the internet that there might even a tsunami that would occur on the southernmost part of the archipelago. That was estimated to be around the 3rd week of July, thanks heavens it never occurred.

Unloading History: Anglo-Saxon Era

The pictures below are some of the great finds in one of the English farms in Burntwood, England. These pictures depicts that of an elite Anglo-Saxon army I suppose, judging from the finished and beautifully crafted artworks on gold. It is estimated to be dating back between 565 and 725. This is simply amazing, a great find indeed! These would probably rewrite the history of medieval England. Click on the picture

The man holding the artifacts is Terry Herbert, the man who is responsible
of the hoard and a gold strip with Latin writings taken from the bible.

a gold plaque and a horse-shaped terminal

Various items from the hoard and a folded golden cross

and this is the map where they unearthed the hoard, the exact location is being kept secret for some obvious reasons. An elderly man in his 50's, an amateur treasure hunter and unemployed, he detected something on earth while searching for a fortune using his metal detector on his friends farm field. He's been searching on the field for a few days and later asked assistance from the authorities to evaluate what's in there. It turned out to be a stash of golden artifacts and other stuffs used in battle.

According to the news from Yahoo, the hoard was officially declared treasure by a coroner on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2009 which means it will be valued by experts. Once valued, the proceeds will be divided equally by Terry and his friend, the owner of the farm. An expert estimated two of the items to around a sum of 7-digits each, whoa! He surely had fun out there with his metal detector, and eventually became a millionaire!

Find out more about the story from AP at Yahoo and about these artifacts here.

Thanks Google!

Smile ^_^ or wink ??? Am just happy :) Why?

First I got this message then after few minutes, yes, just few minutes, I am like a child rolling on my bed to kid my GF. She's been bullying me that I can't do it. Although I know she's supporting me, we sometimes bully each other. It's our way of showing fondness.

I've blogged about this last month and I've been contemplating on how to realize it. I've searched online and read numerous sites so I can decide what's best for me. I think am just a notch higher than a beginner here so i thought it's not practical for me to do it like many experienced bloggers do. I just want it simple and I just want my presence on the web. I was thinking that if purchase a domain with hosting, it would cost me much, per month. Though I've found some free hosting sites, there are also limits to your storage. With blogspot, I can have unlimited storage since it's with google.

Then I noticed a colleague the other day doing rounds on his site. With my usual thirst of curiousness, asked him what his host is. He said he's hosting it on google. He said he only paid for the domain. I thought it's a good idea, just exactly perfect with what I have in mind. In fact, that's one of the reason why I can't easily give up my blogspot. I've been accustomed to blogger and just not ready yet spending another amount for hosting. Fact is, I've already tried the idea with a free domain account from my other site but I was so excited and impatient. I got the same error but I did not want to wait, although I found an article that it's normal since it's still updating I guess, but I was too impatient and reverted back the url. I am afraid of losing my little traffic, eh. So when my colleague said he's done it with google, he actually nailed my assumption. I said I'd try it at home and so I did today, and became impatient again at first but eventually gave it a try. What convinced me was the information from google that "it would take 24-48hrs" for the site to be active. I thought that's a long wait, but wait... there's another line that says it could also take some few minutes or upto 30minutes only. This line really convinced me so I waited and became impatient again. I thought it says upto 30 minutes so why won't I try it (after just 3 mins. i guess). So I typed my blogspot url on the address bar and wooollaahh, I failed my GF, I got it redirected, hehehe. Now we're both happy :). Weird? Yea, I am.

So that's why am happy, got something done today. When my curiosity got fed up, that's a doze of happiness for me. I am not an all-time google user but I guess I have a good reason to love google now. I am still not 100% sure though about this, if what I am thinking is absolutely right, I still have to figure out. Please let me know if you have knowledge about this. Anyway, thanks Google!

Friendship Blog Award

I am still a novice on blogging so I am still learning a lot. Recently, I received a message from my shoutbox coming from My Pink Shoelace that I got an award. This is my first time to receive an award for a blog.

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Downed by Flu

It's supposed to be my last day of my work week before my day-off. Yesterday, whilst on my usual work routine, I've been feeling dizzy and sensed some heat coming out of my nose on exhale. I know something is not right.

Truly, when I woke up after couple hours of sleep, I could feel the weight of my body. I felt heavy and pain lingers on my back. As I switched position and feeling the heat surrounding me like chakra* heat waves, it was then I was certain that I got flu.

Guess I got another day off but not really happy though, I feel sick. I can't make the most of my rest days. Good thing though I was able to call the office 2hrs. before my scheduled shift - trying to be safe. I hate it but I have to buy drugs medicines and more fruits.

So long guys, enjoy your weekend!

*When I say chakra, I am referring to energy like wave surrounding the body like those we see in Naruto or Dragonball animes, :)

Free Blog Modification

For months I've been wondering how other bloggers come up with a nice theme. I've searched online and there are those themes that are available for a fee. There are also themes from wordpress that I like but since I am hosting blogger, I don't think it's practical to sign-up for wordpress and transfer my posts there.

I've been patiently browsing for more possibilities and I feel like it's really possible since I had encountered lot's of blogspot hosted sites boasting excellent themes. I guess I've been loathing around while doing my search, impatient to wait for the web results. Found out it's not really that hard to find one. Simply search for blogger templates and you'd get millions. But what makes it hard for me to find one anyway, when there are millions returned from the search? If you've guessed I'm looking for free, you guessed it right. I just can't afford to dole out extra amount for the template, so I thought I'd rather learn the basics. I just wanted a simple one, clean and won't itch my eyes.

I continued feeding my curiousity until I found out that there's actually someone who's actually willing to convert wordpress templates to blogger. You can even request for it. You can even download the templates for free. The author only asked that you retain the credits since these are are licensed under a Creative Commons License, thus removing the credits would be using an illegal copy of the same. You can simplify the credits or relocate, but not remove them. I guess he's kind enough to share the template so he deserved the credit. That's also another way of thanking him for his efforts. There are also tips and tricks on tweaking your template. If you have extra funds, you may donate any amount to keep the site going.

If you want to give your site a make over, try visiting his site and don't forget to spread the love!
